Headphone Reviews of the AKG K702 and AKG K240 MK II
In Best AKG Headphones, we reviewed three of the most popular headphones from AKG.
Here we review two more—AKG's K702 Reference Class Open-Back Headphone product and the AKG K240 MKII Headphones product.
AKG K702 Reference Class Open-Back Headphones
AKG's K701 headphones have a reputation as superior headphones within their price range, and the K702 product was designed to be similar to them.
The K702s were specifically designed to allow for a total "surround sound" experience when wearing headphones, and they are best used with high-end audio equipment such as superior-quality stereo sets, CD players, DVD or Blu-Ray players, and HD televisions.
Users are very impressed with how nicely these headphones are made for comfort and customized fitting, something lacking in a great many heaphones.
The sound quality that these offer is found to be mind-boggling to many users, giving a true impression of "being there live" especially in instances of listening to music.
However, sometimes users find this hi-fidelity sound quality too much to bear—there can be an overbearing "crispness" to these headphones that washes out the bass range and makes the higher end sounds "tin-like".
But, in general, users find that after approximately 100 hours of use, the K702 headphones get "broken in" as their drivers calm down a little, and then the superior sound quality that so many users are thrilled with really kicks in.
These AKG headphones are often compared to Sennheisers and typically found to be better than they are.

AKG K240 MKII Headphones
AKG's K240 MK II headphones are designed as professional-level headphones that could be used for making recordings. They are the continuation of the company's K240 studio headphones line which has a superior reputation already.
There are some differences with the MK II headphones.
One is that the company now includes two cables—the standard light weight cable along with a coiled cable. This is done both to tend to possible personal preference and to provide a spare cable in case one of them breaks.
The second important difference is that AKG engineers have also re-designed the ear cushions to be softer and give the user better fit. It's been found by users that this also enhances the bass pitches.
The sound quality of the K240 MK II headphones is equally impressive to users as that of their predecessors' except, as mentioned, the bass sounds are now even clearer.
Users find utterly remarkable sound-separation which can be especially good for listening to complex audio such as orchestral music. The user is given that "being there" feeling.
If you were going to be doing any home studio recording or live performance board-jockeying, these AKG headphones would be an extremely valuable tool for you to use.
However, when compared with comparable Sennheiser HD-555 headphones or some other, similar headphones sold by competitors, these AKG headphones have been criticized by some users for "flimsy" construction, with the concern here being that with heavy use they could all to easily get broken...and for the price that would not be good at all.
Other notes from AKG:
- Semi-open, circumaural design
- Patented Varimotion speakers
- Leatherette ear pads and velvet ear pads

AKG's K702 and K240 MK II headphones are both superior sound quality headphone products with reasonable prices for what you get.
The K240 series is more suited to those who need them for recording or sound mixing, but they can still be enjoyed by "lay" music fans who only want them for listening enjoyment.
The K702 product is perfect for listening to anything audio as long as your sound source is also superior quality.
