Best Audio-Technica Headphones
ATHANC7 Noise Cancelling Headphones and ATHM40FS Precision Studio Headphones Reviews

We review two of the very best Audio-Technica headphones as determined by consumers: The ATHANC7 Noise-cancelling headphones and the ATHM40FS Precision Studio headphones.

About Audio-Technica

Audio-Technica has been around since 1962 and is the winner of many industry awards. It's a global group of companies that specialize in the design, manufacture, marketing, and distribution of "problem-solving audio equipment".

Audio-Technica first made a name for itself with state-of-the-art phonograph cartridges. These days, they make and sell headphones, high-performance microphones, wireless systems, and sound board mixers for home and professional use.

Audio-Technica ATHANC7 Noise-cancelling Headphones

Audio Technica ATHANC7 Noise Cancelling Headphones
Audio-Technica's ATHANC7 Noise-cancelling Headphones are one of their biggest selling items, and with very good reason.

They are often compared to the Bose QC2 noise-cancelling headphones, often seen as the industry gold standard for the price range. But the ATHANC7 are typically found to be a better bargain (often just half the price of the Bose) and better-made.

But, are the A-T ATHANC7 as good as the Bose QC2?

Well, the noise-canceling technology is absolutely state-of-the-art. When non-music audio is playing, you only hear outside sounds that are in the room as if someone were speaking in low tones outside the room with the door closed.

But with music playing, you can turn the volume down to only about 1/4th of your usual listening volume and hear nothing outside the music at all. This may actually surpass the Bose!

The high and mid-range pitches come through more clearly on the ATHANC7 than they do with the Bose, and percussion (even the vocalist's breathing) is crisper and clearer, too.

Bose still has the edge in quality with the lower pitches and the bass, but EQ adjustments can make up for that, at least somewhat.

These Audio-Technica headphones are made with more cushioning and are more adjustable than the Bose, and have a more solid construction as already mentioned.

Other notes:
  • The Noise Canceling option is powered by one AAA battery which lasts for approximately 40 hours — no need for charging it up like you do with the Bose Q-series headphones.
  • The QuietPoint active noise-cancelling technology effectively reduces environmental noise by up to 85% with or without audio.
  • Audio functions in the passive mode even without the battery.
  • Lightweight, compact design makes these ideal for travel.

Audio-Technica ATHM40FS Precision Studio Headphones

Audio Technica ATHM40FS Precision Studio Headphones
A-T's ATHM40FS Precision Studio headphones are another top selling headphone product of theirs. These headphones are known to be nicely-fitting, durably constructed, comfortable, and most importantly able to deliver the highest sound quality within an affordable price range.

The sound quality with these Audio-Technica headphones is extraordinarily well-balanced, in fact — so they live up to their name of being "studio headphones", as this is the sound quality that musicians, producers, and engineers get to hear in the recording studio.

And, this quality of sound extends to non-music audio as well, including video game sounds and spoken words.

These no-frills headphones are often said to be the best in their price range — they can typically be purchased for less than $100.

Other advantages that they offer:
  • Sturdy build.
  • Conveniently long cord that is attached to only one side of the headphones.
  • Rotating earpieces, allowing flat storage as well as one-ear monitoring for recording purposes.
The only features of these Audio-Technica headphones that users often don't like are their appearance (very bland-looking) and the fact that they don't make for the best traveling headphones because of their size, although they are not any bigger than they need to be to deliver the sound quality that they do.

But if all you care about is how they make things sound and getting superior pricing, the ATHM40FS Precision Studio headphones are perfect for you.

Other notes provided by Audio-Technica:
  • Flat, extended frequency response for mixing and monitoring
  • Pro features include field-replaceable cables, drivers, and ear pads
  • 1,600 mW of power handling and high SPL capability

Summary

Audio-Technica's ATHANC7 Noise-cancelling Headphones and their ATHM40FS Precision Studio headphones are both high quality options that have bargain price tags.

If you want the added feature of being able to travel easily with sleek-looking headphones, then the slightly more expensive ATHANC7 Noise-cancelling headphones are for you.

If you want to save even more money or you want to do some home studio recording, then you should get the ATHM40FS Precision Studio headphones.
