JVC is a very popular Japanese consumer electronics brand. JVC actually stands for Japan Victor Company. JVC has been designing very high quality audio and video products for over 80 years.
In addition to headphones, they make high definition TVs, home theater systems, stereo audio components like amplifiers and speakers, portable audio players, DVD players and recorders and more.
When it comes to JVC you can be sure of a high quality product without a high price tag.
JVC HANC250 High-Grade Noise Canceling Headphones
These JVC headphones are one of the most popular noise-canceling headphones on the market today, second only to the industry-leading Bose Quiet Comfort 15.
If you can't afford (or don't want to pay) $300 for headphones, the HANC250 is an excellent alternative for about a third of the price.
These headphones have an over the ear (supra-aural) design featuring memory foam cushion earpads. They are rated to provide 85% noise cancellation. This is slightly lower than the Bose QC 15.
In addition, two patent pending JVC innovations offer additional noise isolation. This includes double housing on the earpiece as well as an innovative technique to attach the memory foam earpad to the headphones.
At only 5.3 ounces, they are one of the lightest headphones in their class. The light weight along with the memory foam earpads improves comfort when used for long periods at a stretch.
They have excellent sound quality. The bass and treble are well balanced and no hiss is apparent when noise canceling is switched on.
They feature a folding design which, along with the noise cancellation feature, makes them a great traveling companion on airline flights.
These headphones are powered by a single AAA battery which is rated for 50 hours of listening. They also feature audio pass-through when the battery dies and as a result can function with the noise cancellation feature switched off.
They also have a standard detachable 4 foot cord. This makes it possible to replace the cord in the event of cord malfunction or breakage — a significantly cheaper alternative than buying new headphones. It is also great to be able to remove the cord so that it doesn't get in the way if you just want to block out noise but not listen to music.
There is no bulky battery pack on the wire which makes them more comfortable and maneuverable.
Advantages over the Bose Quiet Comfort
These JVC headphones work with a standard audio cable as opposed to the proprietary audio cable that the Bose uses.
Also, a standard AAA battery is used to power the noise canceling circuit while the Bose uses a proprietary battery. If your battery dies during your travel you can't buy a new one at an airport if you have the Bose headphones.
These JVC headphones feature audio pass-through and as a result they can be used with the noise canceling circuit switched off. This is especially handy if your battery dies and you don't have a replacement with you. The Bose does not have this feature.
At $100 they are about a third of the $300 price tag for the Bose headphones (The $100 is because Amazon offers a 50% discount on these headphones).
There is no volume dial on the headset.
The headphone cable is short (4 ft) which makes them a little difficult to use with a desktop computer or home audio system.
Battery replacement is difficult since they require you to pop open the right ear piece.
If you wear glasses they can become uncomfortable after long periods of usage as the headphones apply pressure to the frames of your glasses.
Many customers have complained about audible hiss when used with a laptop computer, practically making them unusable. There is no hiss when using these headphones with MP3 players.
- A hard cover carrying case
- An airline dual plug adapter
- 0.25 inch adapter for home stereo equipment
The JVC HANC250 are the best noise canceling headphones you can buy for the money. They are not as good as the Bose Quiet Comfort 15, but at $200 less they are an amazing value.

JVC HANC100 Noise Canceling Headphones
The JVC HANC100 headphones are a more basic version of the more expensive HANC250. While similar in many ways they offer their own unique benefits.
At half the cost, they are worth looking into if you're considering the HANC250. They are also offered at a 50% discount from Amazon.
Comparison with the HANC250
These JVC headphones offer 75% noise cancellation which is slightly lower than the 80% offered by the HANC250.
They have a longer audio cable. At 4.9 ft it improves usage with home stereo equipment or desktop computers. Also this headphone cord is retractable which makes these headphones quite unique. This feature is great for when you wish to use only the noise canceling functionality but not listen to music.
They also feature a folding design. But since the earcups fold inward and not laterally they are bulkier and slightly less portable.
They have good audio quality similar to the HANC250. It is rich but slightly lacking in bass.
Unlike the HANC250, customers report clear audio without hiss when they are used with a computer.
These JVC headphones are half the cost of the HANC250 and significantly cheaper than the Bose QC 15.
They also come with a carrying case and airline adapter.
Customers report soreness of ears after extended usage due to the smaller size and shallow depth of the earcups.
The JVC HANC100 is not as good as the more expensive HANC250, but they can be bought for half the price. Since they offer many of the same features and similar audio quality as the HANC250, they are worth considering into if you're looking for low cost but high quality noise canceling headphones.

JVC HAFX34B Marshmallow Headphones
Lastly we look at the JVC HAFX34B. These are noise isolating headphones and not to be confused with the noise canceling headphones we reviewed above.
They are a great choice for workout headphones. And they are an option for airline travel as well due to their small size and superior noise isolation.
The most unique feature of these JVC headphones is the memory foam earpieces. These are different than the earpieces you find in most in-ear headphones. Since they are made of memory foam you have to first squish them and insert them into your ear canal. They then expand and form a perfect fit which blocks out a significant portion of outside noise. The ear pieces come in two different sizes for optimal fit.
They offer great sound. The bass is rich while mid and high ranges are strong and clear.
The cord is very short at 3.28 ft and as such are optimized for workouts. They are also available in several cool colors which gives them a hip look.
The JVC HAFX34B Marshmallow headphones are excellent in-ear headphones with great sound, great noise isolation and a great price. The short cord makes them perfect to use a pair of workout headphones.
