Sennheiser PX 100 Collapsible Headphones

The Sennheiser PX 100 collapsible headphones are one of the most popular headphone choices for portable media players, due to their compact design, excellent sound and reasonable price.

About Sennheiser

Sennheiser is a German company that manufactures audio electronics products for consumers as well as businesses. They have been around since 1945 and are most famous for their high quality headphones.

Sennheiser PX 100 Collapsible Headphones
The open-aire PX 100 is the entry level headphone in Sennheiser's PX lineup, which also includes the closed PX 200 and the noise-canceling PX 250.

These headphones are supra-aural, meaning that they sit on your ear without covering your entire ear. They feature a slim, lightweight design and are relatively unobtrusive which makes them perfect for on-the-go listening.

They are collapsible for convenient portability. The earphone cups can be turned 90 degrees and then folded up. A rugged carrying case is included. After folding them they can fit in a shirt or pant pocket.

Sound

The Sennheiser PX100 consumer headphones deliver some of the best sound you'll find for headphones in this weight class and price range.

The reason for this is that these headphones are built with duofol diaphragms with a spiral embossing. Duofol diaphragms work to reduce standing waves, which if not reduced tend to lower the quality of sound. This results in sound that is clearer than most other headphones of it's class.

Twin damping technology produces a crisp, fat bass response. Neodynium magnets, the strongest magnets available, are utilized to reduce distortion. The sound is full and warm. There is a higher emphasis on the low end. However, the high end and mid range sounds are not drowned out. So these headphones do not sound muddy.

The sound is so clear that you will be able to individually distinguish each sound in a jazz rhythm section and each instrument in a classical string quartet.

Initially the sound is soft and smooth, best suited for jazz music. However, within a short time of usage the highs and lows open up and harsher music like rock, metal and hip-hop sounds great too.

Comfort

The Sennheiser PX 100 collapsible headphones are lightweight and have a padded headband which makes them relatively comfortable for long periods of usage. The earcups are padded as well.

The headband is adjustable to provide the optimal fit for your head.

Disadvantages

The Sennheiser PX100 headphones are "over the ear", and as such provide next to no sound isolation. What this means is that you have to turn the volume up louder than you would for in-ear headphones. Also, at high volumes the sound will bleed out and you may end up sharing your music with someone next to you.

Also, the headphone cord is thin and short. So extra care must be taken to prevent damage through snagging.

Summary

The Sennheiser PX 100 collapsible headphones are one of the most popular headphones for portable media players like the Zune and iPod.

They have top-of-the-line sound, a decent look, are highly portable and can be bought for a reasonable price. They provide an excellent alternative to the stock earphones that come with MP3 players.
