Best Surround Sound Headphones
Headphone Reviews of Sennheiser RS 130 Wireless Surround Sound Headphones and more

Here we review the best in surround sound headphones from various companies.

Sennheiser RS 130 Wireless Surround Sound Headphones

Sennheiser RS 130 Wireless Surround Sound Headphones
The comfortably-fitting Sennheiser RS 130 Wireless product allows you to get up and walk around your house without missing one second of audio.

You don't have to be in the line of sight of the source, as these broadcast dynamic surround sound via radio signal. In fact, you can even listen to music with surround sound dynamics while working in your yard!

If you experience any signal fuzziness or disruption you can simply move your transmitting unit around a little and try the various channel options.

Sennheiser says that these headphones broadcast a clear signal "up to 150 meters" but that is, in truth, an exaggeration. You should expect some minor hissing and popping if you walk out of the room where the audio source is, but this will not interfere with the dynamics of the surround sound giving you that "I am there!" sensation.

It should be noted that the Sennheiser RS 130 Wireless headphones are not noise-reduction headphones, like their 140 counterparts are. So if there is significant noise in the background around where you are you'll hear that, too.

Some users are not satisfied with this , but the surround sound and broadcast quality of the "Senn 130s" for this price range is usually rated extremely high by users.

Other Notes from Sennheiser:
  • Wireless, rechargeable hi-fi headphones with SRS surround sound mode
  • Intelligent auto tuning and automatic signal control ensure high-quality reception

Philips SHE5910 Virtual Surround Sound In-Ear Headphones

Philips SHE5910 Virtual Surround Sound Headphones
These "earbuds" from Philips create the sonic illusion of being immersed in and surrounded by the sounds of the audio.

The SHE5910s come with three different rubber ear bud sizes so that you can use those that best fit your particular ears—a common complaint of all earbuds is that they fall out too easily or are just uncomfortable.

Users usually find the sound quality of these Philips virtual surrond sound earbuds to be superior.

Another leading quality of these is that they are ideal for getting surround sound comforably while you travel—over-ear headphones don't go well with sleeping on a plane or train.

Users are also impressed with the wire: instead of the usual "V" that comes up the chest and can get your way, these have the wire go directly into the left ear bud and split off from there to connect the right ear bud. This is a simple modication but greatly appreciated by most users!

Some users have said that the sound of these ear buds is a little muddy. Others have complained that they aren't very durable and get worn out and require replacement far too easily.

It also seems that if you lose your ear buds it's difficult to find replacements just for them. But all in all, for the price (under $25) the Philips SHE5910s seem like a fantastic surround sound bargain!

Other Notes from Philips:
  • Copper-clad aluminium wire improves sound quality with neodymium magnet to enhance bass performance
  • 15mm speaker driver optimizes wearing comfort for crisp, clean, non-distorted sound

Zalman ZM-RS6F 5.1 Surround Sound Headphones

Zalman ZM-RS6F 5.1 Surround Sound Headphones
The consensus among users is that the Zalman ZM-RS6F headphones are ideal for video gamers. They are comfortable although somewhat heavy and bulky.

Their sound quality is very good for video games' sound effects and have plenty of spacial sound for them, but seems to come off as shallow and crammed together for music.

But, within their $50 or less price range, these are intended to be headphones that get used for personal convenience or privacy—they are not intended to replace high-quality speaker systems that would work better for music and movie viewing.

For their price, if you're a video gamer these are a bargain!

Other Notes from Zalman:
  • Enhanced spatial and realistic effects by separating front, rear, and center speakers
  • Easy setup with sound card in your PC equipped with a DVD-ROM for games or DVD movies
  • Excellent fidelity, enhanced localization of on-screen sound, clear dialogue and discrete sound audibility

Summary

All three of the surround sound headphones reviewed above are excellent, but they meet the needs of three different groups of people.

The highest quality headphones reviewed here are definitely the Sennheisers, but they would not make for ideal travel listening like the Philips and they are very expensive compared to them.

The Zalmans are probably not for music listening but are highly affordable and great for computer video games and DVD viewing.
