The Flashy Zunes: Zune 4GB, Zune 8GB and Zune 16GB

The Zune 4GB , Zune 8GB and Zune 16GB belong to the line of flash-memory Zune players. These players have a lower storage capacity but they are very small and great for music on the go.

Zune 8 GB Digital Media Player (Black)
The flash-based Zune is available in 4 GB, 8 GB and 16 GB sizes, and in a variety of colors.

The Zune 8 is the most popular. It has the perfect balance of price, storage and color selection. I own a black Zune 8. You can tell that I love to experiment when it comes to colors!

These players have no moving parts and so your music will never skip no matter what you doing - whether it's running, biking or lifting weights.

They are also more robust, so if you accidently drop them they should be fine. Not that I'm recommending to go around dropping your Zune!

The Zune HD also belongs to this category, but is not yet available as of this writing.

If you are not familiar with the general features of a Zune, start here first...

Then come back here and continue to read this page.

Here I'll describe only the unique features of the Zune 4, Zune 8 and Zune 16.

All three of these players are identical except for their storage capacities and the colors in which they are available. And of course the price.

So if you are looking at buying one of these players, these three things are the all that you need to consider.

Storage Capacity

The number following the Zune represents the number of GB that is available for storage.

For example, the Zune 4 contains 4 GB of storage, the Zune 8 contains 8 GB and the Zune 16 contains 16 GB of storage.

You can think of them as the little sister, middle sister and big sister of the same family!

The Zune 4GB is capable of carrying 1000 songs, 25000 photos or 12 hours of video.

In the case of the Zune 8GB, it's 2000 songs and 24 hours of video. In the case of the Zune 16GB, it's 4000 songs and 48 hours of video.

Plenty to keep you motivated for long workouts!

If you are considering the Zune 4GB, you have four color options to choose from - black, red, green and pink.

The Zune 8GB is available in the same colors as the Zune 4 but there is one additional color to choose from - blue. The Zune 16GB is available only in black.

Why aren't all the colors available for all three players? Beats me! If you can find out, I'll love to know.

All of them come with a 1.8 inch color LCD screen that supports a resolution 320 x 240. A bit tiny for video but still functional.

All three players are the same size - quite small and compact at 3.6 inches tall, 1.6 inches wide and 0.33 inches thick and they weigh only 1.7 ounces. Very convenient to just slip in your pocket.

Fitness Playlists

If you have a Zune Pass, then you can download fitness playlists from the Zune Marketplace. These playlists are designed for different activities - everything from yoga to walking to aerobics to Xtreme sports!

The official price from Microsoft for the Zune 4GB is $99.99, for the Zune 8GB is $139.99 and for the Zune 16GB is $179.99.

If you are considering buying one of these Zune players, you should probably also look at the iPod Nano series which is very similar.

Only you can decide which player is right for you.
