Zune dock and the FM radio

by Dennis
(Los Angeles, California)

I have a Zune 8GB and a Zune dock. I don't seem to be able to get the FM radio to work while docked. Am I doing something wrong?

Answer:

This is actually expected behavior. The older Zune docks do not come with a built in FM radio. This has been added to the new Zune HD AV Dock.

However, you can listen to FM radio using the older Zune dock. The trick is to keep your earphones plugged into your Zune. These must be the earphones that came with your Zune since they have an FM antenna built into them.

FM antenna

The wire of the Zune headphones has an FM radio antenna built into it. This is not the case with headphones from other manufacturers.

Of course, you can listen to the FM radio through other headphones. However, you may notice that the signal strength of the FM radio is better with the Zune headphones. (If you're already getting good reception you may not notice this.)

I personally can't stand the headphones that came with the Zune and ALWAYS use other headphones. However, in this case if you have your Zune in a dock and you don't get FM radio reception then plugging in the Zune headphones should fix this issue.

Curious as to why you say that only the originally supplied headphones will allow FM reception? I use a mix of Shure, Koss, Skullcandy, Sony, etc. and can always get an FM signal on V1, V2, and HD Zunes. I've looked at the OEM headphones and don't see any extra contact points that would give them special capabilities. Am I missing something here?
