How To Pick The Perfect
Zune MP3 Player (Or Ipod)

Thinking of buying a Zune mp3 player? Not sure if you should buy an iPod instead? Only you can decide. And this guide will give you all the information you need to make that decision.

While this guide focuses on the Zune mp3 player, you'll also find an in-depth comparison with the iPod. Because it's always a good idea to look at other options. You won't know your best option until you've looked at them all!

Features, please...

Before looking at individual players, it's a good idea to become familiar with the features you can expect from any Zune mp3 player.

Does the Zune walk it's talk? You bet! Microsoft's Zune digital media player is packed with features. This is one area where the Zune stands head and shoulders above the iPod. Here's a quick rundown...

Let's start with the music. After all that's why you are buying an mp3 player, right?

The Zune mp3 player does not disappoint and supports the most common formats for digital music. But the Zune also comes with an FM radio tuner - something that's missing from the iPod.

Music support by itself isn't good enough nowadays. Everyone does that! What else can the Zune do?

Can it play video? Of course! Audiobooks? Check! Podcasts? Check!

Want to carry your entire digital photo collection in your pocket? The Zune works as a photo viewer too!

How about the ability to sync your music collection without connecting to your PC? You can do this with the Zune mp3 player since it comes with built in WI-FI. Oops! Apple forgot to include that on most iPods.

Can you play games on the Zune? Yes! You can also listen to a customized soundtrack while playing games on your XBox 360, courtesy of your Zune mp3 player.

But doesn't everyone buy an iPod?

But shouldn't make this decision for yourself? You aren't someone who just blindly follows the crowd, right?

Don't get me wrong - An iPod might be just the perfect media player for you. In fact, I own both an iPod and a Zune. And the iPod is a great media player. In some cases it is actually better than the Zune mp3 player.

When it comes to looks, the iPod sure is pretty! Especially with the new iPod Nano colors. If you are going for looks only, the iPod is your best choice.

Do you own a Mac? You're probably better off with the iPod too. Unfortunately, the Zune software is not supported on the Mac.

Apple fan? Microsoft hater? You know you need the iPod!

But in most other cases, a Zune is a better choice.

Of course, only you can make that decision. But I'll help you by providing in-depth comparisons of the Zune vs iPod.

So that you can make an informed decision. Instead of just following the crowd.

Zune MP3 Players

No, I didn't forget. I told you that I would show you how to pick the perfect Zune mp3 player. I just had to show you some other stuff first!

So, let's get to it, shall we?

Zune players can be broadly divided into two groups - flash based players and hard-drive based players.

What's the difference? The main thing you should be aware of is that the storage space will vary depending on the type. Flash based players have less storage (up to 16 GB) and hard-drive based players have more storage (up to 120 GB).

So which one should you pick? That depends. On both you, as well as what you plan to use it for.

Zunes with Flash!

This includes the Zune 4, Zune 8 and Zune 16.

You should consider one of these players if -

  • Size is important, the smaller the better.

  • You need music to pump up your workouts. The rest is gravy.

  • Music is king. But you might want to watch videos too.

  • Price is important, the cheaper the better.

  • But you aren't a cheapo, otherwise you wouldn't be thinking about either Zune or iPod! Zen, anyone?

You'll get most of the features you learned about earlier with these players.

I forgot to mention the Zune HD! This player is not out yet but expect it later this year. Talk about the coolest media player ever!!

Microsoft hasn't released all the details. But what I know so far has me pumped!

Hard-drivin' Zunes

The hard drive Zunes are the Zune 80 and Zune 120.

You'll want one of these if -

  • You care a great deal about video and plan to watch a lot of it on your Zune.
  • You travel a lot and want, no, need to have your entire collection with you. You can't be bothered with sync'ing before that flight!
  • You have a massive media collection and need to have your entire collection with you at all times. Never know when you want to listen to that one song only to find out that you didn't sync it!
  • Price is not so important. But you aren't Bill Gates either!
