Zune not detected

I just installed the version 4.0 update of the Zune software and now my computer doesn't recognize my Zune. Help!

Answer:



This is a very common problem encountered if you own an older Zune (pre-HD) and installed the version 4.0 software update (which you must install if you want to continue to access your Zune pass).

Fortunately it's easy to fix. Just follow these two steps:

1. You must install an updated driver for your PC.

Your PC won't detect your Zune until you have an updated driver. Your PC should detect this automatically and download the updated driver, but sometimes it doesn't.

To determine if you have the correct driver version, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your Zune is connected to your PC via the sync cable.
  2. Click Start, right-click Computer, then click Properties.
  3. Click Device Manager.
  4. Select your computer.
  5. Go to the Actions menu and select Scan for hardware changes. Zune should be listed under Portable Devices. (If it wasn't installed correctly, you may find it under Other Devices as USB Device. If you see a yellow exclamation mark, something went wrong during installation of the driver.)
  6. Double-click Zune and click the Driver tab. The Driver Version should say 4.0.622.0.

If it doesn't, then you need to update the driver. Follow the instructions in step 9 here to update the driver.

2. You must update the firmware on your Zune.

To check if you have the correct version of the firmware, follow these steps:

  1. In your Zune menu, go to settings, then about and select zune.
  2. The Version should say 3.20 (35).

If it doesn't, you must update the firmware. You can do this as follows:

  1. Make sure your Zune is connected to your PC via the sync cable.
  2. In the software go to settings, then device.
  3. Select player update.
  4. This will allow you to update the version of your firmware, if it's not already up to date.

If you follow these two steps, your Zune should be functional again.
