The Windows XP Zune theme is a cool new look for your desktop. Click here to learn more about it.

Zune Theme

Unfortunately it was released for Windows XP and then never updated for Vista.

So does that mean if you've moved on to Vista you're stuck?

Heck, no! Fortunately the world is full of people who make the impossible, possible.

It is possible to get the same Zune look and feel on your Vista desktop. It's just not as easy as with Windows XP.

Don't bother trying to install the XP version on Vista. You'll just get this error...

Error trying to install the Windows XP Zune theme on Vista.

As you can see, I tried.

Instead, follow these steps and you'll have the Zune theme running on your Vista desktop in no time!

And as an added bonus I've added a link below to a great looking wallpaper that's much better than the one included with the theme. Trust me, it's going to make your theme so much cooler!

  1. Download these files.

This is a zip archive which includes the theme files, wallpaper and a program called Style Selector that will easily allow you to apply the theme to Vista.

  2. Extract the zip archive someplace on your computer.
  3. Double click the file called StyleSelector.exe.

Note: You'll see this security warning. It's generally not a good idea to run unrecognized software like this. But it is safe to run this program. At least it worked for me.

Note 2: StyleSelector does not run on 64 bit Vista. It works for 32 bit Vista only.

  4. Select a style.

    StyleSelector

StyleSelector gives you 3 different visual styles to choose from: Zune_Candara, Zune_Corbel and Zune_Segoe_UI. They are essentially the same theme with different fonts.

These styles come to us courtesy of PsychoB from DeviantArt. He's ported them from Windows XP. Thanks, PsychoB!

Try all three and choose the one you like best. My personal favorite is Zune_Segoe_UI. It's the easiest to read and looks the cleanest. The other fonts look cool, but are not as usable in day-to-day work.

And remember to select the Startup checkbox at the bottom. If you forget to do this, you will have to run StyleSelector each time you reboot your computer in order to reapply this style.

  5. Apply the wallpaper.

There are two versions to choose from (Zune.jpg or Zune Widescreen.jpg) depending on whether you have a normal or widescreen monitor.

Follow these steps to apply the wallpaper...

    Setting Vista Background

    • Right click on your desktop and choose Personalize.
    • Select Desktop Background.
    • Select the location where you extracted the zip archive in step 2.
    • Choose the normal or widescreen version of the wallpaper.
    • For the positioning choose the first option where it stretches the wallpaper to make it fullscreen.
    • Select Ok.

There you go! You now have the Windows XP Zune theme running on Vista. Isn't that cool?

One last optional step...

As you can see, the included wallpaper is kind of lame. Ok, maybe that's an understatement. It's not cool. And it totally does not go with the dark theme. What were they thinking?

Do yourself a favor and apply a cooler wallpaper. There are 1000's of free wallpapers to choose from if you search online.

I chose this wallpaper. It rocks!!
